About Lynn Woods Country Park

Lynn Woods Country Park spans over 2,200 acres making it one of the largest municipal parks in the United States. Located just five miles north of downtown Boston, the park encompasses a varied landscape of dense forests, rocky outcrops, serene ponds, and rugged hills. Its geographic setting includes features shaped by the last Ice Age, such as glacial erratics and kettle holes that now form small lakes and wetlands. Ecologically, Lynn Woods supports a rich mix of northern hardwood forest species including oak, maple, and birch, providing habitat for wildlife like white-tailed deer, red foxes, and numerous bird species. The park’s history is deeply tied to the city of Lynn; it was officially established in 1881 as a public preserve and water supply, and portions were added over time to protect this urban green space. Key recreational opportunities include over 30 miles of multi-use hiking and mountain biking trails, fishing in several stocked ponds, and winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Notable landmarks include the historic Stone Tower (also known as the Lookout Tower), offering panoramic views of the Boston skyline and surrounding region, as well as the Devil’s Slide—a steep natural rock formation popular with climbers and adventurous hikers. The park’s blend of natural beauty, accessibility, and variety of outdoor activities draws visitors year-round, appealing both to locals and those seeking a quick nature escape near the city.
